Computer MapsOne of DeedMapper's most exciting features is its optional computer maps. This allows you to not only plot your deeds, but place them accurately on modern era maps!
There are a number of types of map layers available for DeedMapper: Streams, Roads, Railroads, and Public Land sections, and they're available for the entire country, with the exception of Alaska.
Stream maps are very useful for placing deeds, particularly in the original colonies and other early states. The streams category includes rivers, creeks, runs, brooks, lakes, ponds, coastlines, islands and the like.
Road maps can add "color" to your printouts and make them more useful to you and others. They can also be helpful in placing deeds in cases the local roads have remained unchanged. Many old roads were run on property lines.
Railroad maps generally have limited amounts of information on them, but can be particularly useful when you know the area you are researching has many railroad lines or where they are a significant local feature that will help you in deed placement.
Public Land section maps show the boundaries of each section along with a label inside each section identifying it (e.g. S24 T2N R3W).
Boundary maps show state and county boundaries and the boundaries of federal lands, forests, etc. Boundary maps for the northeast commonly also contain town boundaries. Boundary maps are included at no charge when both stream and road map layers (the most popular combination) are ordered.
Our maps do not contain feature names, such as stream names or route numbers, but DeedMapper allows you to add your own names to the maps. Even so, we recommend you have good county maps or USGS Topographic maps to complement the DeedMapper maps.
The maps come on a separate CD, along with instructions on how to install them into a project. If you purchase multiple maps of a region we package them for you so they fit together seamlessly in your project.
Note also that you can order several map types for an area and we'll overlay them for you to create a composite map.
DeedMapper also allows you to use your own scanned or other background image (BMP, TIF, GIF, JPG formats) instead of the maps described above. In order to properly scale the image and your parcels DeedMapper needs to know the scanning density (dots per inch) and the scale of your map. You provide this information to the program and it takes care of the rest!
