Solomon is sometimes confused with Solomon J. Broyles, son of
Peter. Both men lived in Monroe Co., Va., and were of similar age.

Solomon seems to have raised Allen Broyles, son of Peter's daughter
Elizabeth. Allen was born around 1804 and was said to have been
raised by one of the Solomons. Family history suggests it was
Solomon J. Broyles but if you examine the census entries for the
two Solomons it's clear there's a much better story with this
Solomon. See also the note below regarding Isabel Dunn.

Solomon's supposed third wife, Fanny, shows up in the census starting
in 1840. The 1830 census shows Solomon with young sons and a
probable wife. The fit isn't perfect but Fanny is otherwise
unaccounted for so she is presumed to be his third wife.

1798...1804 - His name appears regularly as a tithable in Madison
Co., Va. [3]5:76

1798...1801 - He is taxed for personal property, Madison Co., Va.
[70]

24 May 1805 - Solomon signed a bond in Madison Co., Va. [3]5:76

            - He moved to Monroe Co., Va.

1810 - Solomon is listed in the Monroe Co., Va. census. He
is also in the Monroe Co. tax lists over the period 1810-37. [51]

25 Aug 1817 - Solomon gives permission for his daughter Malinda
(under 18 years old) to marry Michael Mongold. wit: Henry Erskine,
George Spangler. His handwriting is excellent. [287]

1820 - His name appears in the Monroe Co., Va. census, but
the listing is empty! This is very unusual. He is
not found in the census of Botetourt Co., Va.

1823 - The will of Nathan Eakins is probated in Botetourt
Co., Va. He mentions his daughter "Equilla Broyles (who is
separated from her husband Solomon)." [163]55

1830 - Solomon Broyles is listed on the Monroe Co., Va.
census rolls. He appears to have all the children, but no wife.

1834 - His daughter Louisa marries in Botetourt Co., Va.

15 Feb 1836 - Isabel Dunn gives permission for the marriage of
"her son" Allen Broyles, in Monroe Co., Va. wit: Isaac Cales,
Susanna Broiles. [162] Besides linking Allen to Solomon, this
might indicate that Solomon has passed away. The only curious
thing is how she has the name Dunn.

1840 - Solomon is not found in any census record. He has
therefore probably died. He was present in the tax list of 1837
so we can estimate his death as c. 1839.

1850 - Isabella Broyles is listed in the Botetourt Co.,
Va. census. She is living with her daughter Louisa and husband
David Croft.
