Nicholas is something of a puzzle.  The name is rare, there
being just one man of that name known to have been born around 
the year 1800.  It's natural that we should assign all "Nicholas"
events to the same individual.

He married in Alabama but returned to Tennessee c. 1822, and his
wife apparently died after giving birth to their daughter.  No census 
record has been found for 1830, and we know the two children grew up in 
Sevier Co.  Family tradition is strong that the two children are his.

In 1835 a Nicholas Broyles married Mary Llewellyn in Hopkins Co., Ky.  
She appears to be the daughter of Abednego Llewellyn of that county.  
But it isn't certain this is the same Nicholas-- it's conceivable he's 
the son of Matthias Broyles of Rutherford Co., Tenn.  

In 1840 there's a Nicholas Broyles in Louisiana.  He's 40 to 50 years
old and has a son aged 10 to 15.  This suggests there were three 
children, not two.  (Son Ezekial was 19 in 1840.)

Moving west, he's found single in Cooke Co., Tex., in 1850.  In 1860
he has moved a short distance to Jack Co. where it appears he may have
married again because he has two young children with him.  One is 
8 year old Cornelius Butler.  This suggests Nicholas married a
widow Butler who gave him a daughter Louvina in 1859, but subsequently
died.
