According to Keith [1], Thomas was a son of the somewhat
mysterious James Reuben Broyles and his first wife Martha
Geer. See James for a discussion of this point.
Thomas M. is not found in the 1850 census. His father was
in California and his father's second wife and children were
in Page Co., Iowa, but Thomas is not among them. By 1860
he and his father share a household in California. At least
it appears to be him but there's a 10 year error in his age.
This story means he spent time in California, returned to
Missouri to marry, and then eventually made it back to
California.
Note that there are several Thomas Broyles of the same age.
James Reuben's brother Richard had a son Thomas who was also
born in 1838 but who is supposed to have died before 1850.
And James's brother Reuben also had a son Thomas who was born
in 1837.
Thomas fought for the Union in the Civil War. He was
a private in Battery K of the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery.
