Vance took the last name Mason since he grew up in
the William Mason family of White Co., Tenn.  This is
rather unusual as his mother and brother James kept the 
name Broyles.

I strongly suspect that Vance was one of two sons
born out of wedlock to Martha Broyles.  Martha and the
boys lived with William Mason and his family.

He lived in Kentucky and Texas and was buried in Oak 
Hill Cemetery in Fannin Co., Tex. on 4 Aug 1816. [248]

His death certificate gives his name as David V. Mason.
He died in Whitewright, Texas, in Grayson Co.
His father is given as William Mason and his mother's
maiden name is "don't know", as reported by W.H. Mason,
presumably his son.  The form also reports his birthdate
as 12 Oct 1839. [248]
