The marriage record for Lyda Miller and John William Broyles is quite
clear-- the scanned marriage book is online. However there are reports
he married Serelda S. Miller on the very same date. We have to be
suspicious of this. The census does show him with wife S.S. and Lyda isn't
an obvious diminutive of Serelda though both names contain the letters L,
D, and A. It is possible that Lyda died soon after marriage and that he
remarried to Serelda, possibly a sister to Lyda. If he did marry twice
it isn't clear who the mother is of the first two children. They might
reasonably be the children of Lyda Miller but they are listed here as
being children of Serelda. A census search for Lyda and Serelda in 1850
only turns up "Lilelo S." Miller, age 12, in the household of Joseph Miller
in Jefferson Co. Lilelo could easily be a copying error for Serelda.
The fact that no Lyda Miller is found supports the story that John married
one time to Serelda (Lyda) Miller.
