1 Apr 1848 - Aaron Jr. and George Broyles buy four tracts of land
totalling 163 acres in Campbell Co., from Aaron Sr. for $1200.
The deed refers to a boundary with Michael Broyles. wit: James
Archer, Elias Boman. [46]K:238

3 Jan 1850 - John J. Crittendon, Governor of Ky., states that
by part of land office warrant No. 574 of the Whitley Co. Court,
Aaron Broyles Jr. is to have 1000 acres south of Walker's line,
between it and 36 degrees, 30 North; on the Elk fork. Registered
this date, surveyed 18 Apr 1848. [46]L:34 This looks like a case
where survey errors had Kentucky giving out Tennessee land.

22 Apr 1850 - William Broyles, and Lucinda Broyles (descendants of
Michael Broyles) and her husband James Stanfill hold inherited land
(five parcels totalling 372 acres), on the Elk Fork, near an island,
which they sell to Aaron Broyles, Jr. for $200. wit: John Grimes,
William Campbell. [46]L:88

1850 - He is listed in the census of Campbell Co., Tenn. His
parents Aaron and Nancy Broyles are living with him and his wife
Hannah.

30 Dec 1854 - Aaron Broyles Sr. sells 165 acres of land lying on the
Elkfork waters of the clear fork of the Cumberland River in district
8, to Aaron Broyles Jr., his son, for $1200. wit: Samuel P. Douglas,
Tyre Bolton. [46]M:357

1860 - Aaron is listed in the census of Campbell Co., Tenn.
His mother Nancy, age 85, is living with them. Interestingly, he
lists children Riley and Nancy at the end, as if they are not his
own children. Of course, he had them by his first wife.

1860...1865 - His farm was camped on by armies of the North and South
during the Civil War. "At the close of the war he was a broke man."
[291]

As recounted by his grandson Charles Broyles:

They had a beautiful house at Newcomb, Tenn. Aaron's son Jeremiah
remembered that when he was a lad during the war, a hungry soldier
chased one of the few remaining farm chickens through the "dog trot"
(covered walkway) which connected two of the "houses" (rooms) of the
farmhouse. The chicken flopped tired under a treadle (clothes press)
and escaped the confused soldier while Jerry looked on.

After the war he left his farm at Newcomb and went to Jacksboro,
Tenn., to work for the old Knoxville Nursery Company. One of Riley's
descendants says the old farm never sold, and that it was overrun
by settlers. The town of Newcomb grew up on the site. Some of
Aaron's descendants considered suing. There was also the question
of whether Aaron was able to pay the taxes on the land. He may
have just walked off and left it.

7 Apr 1865 - Aaron Broyles sells a tract of 100 acres in the 10th
district, on the Elk fork, to Samuel P. Douglass for $400. wit:
A.J. Smith, George Davis. [46]O:475

21 Mar 1867 - Aaron Broyles sells for $1 and in consideration of the
benefits to be derived, to the Knoxville and Ky. Railroad Company,
right of way through the tract of land on which he lives, known as
the old Aaron Broyles farm in the 10th district on the waters of
the Elk fork. He retains passways on the upper and lower ends of his
farm and one between James Smith. Rights are to revert to him if
the railroad isn't built. [46]P:271

4 Apr 1867 - Aaron has 1200 acres surveyed opposite Whitley Co., Ky.,
on the Elk Fork. [156] It isn't certain this is him rather than
one of his nephews.

1870 - In the census of Campbell Co., Tenn., his property
is valued at $3000, with a personal estate worth $1633.

10 Jun 1895 - Lewis Broyles is appointed Administrator of Aaron
Broyles, under penalty of $500. {unmarked book of will documents,
Campbell Co. courthouse}

30 Mar 1899 - Lewis Broyles pleads that he has executed the estate of
Aaron Broyles to the best of his ability. He is unable to collect
notes from Ephraim Morgan and William Walden, and found that debts
against the estate totaled $2674. Sale of land to the Mount Morgan
Coal Co. of Whitley County, Ky. fully paid these debts. His request
to be released is approved by R.D. Perkins, County Judge.
