1850 Briles, Jno. Senr. NC, Randolph 75 NC Farmer
John is said to have been a very pious man and very much opposed
to slavery. He was a communicant of the Methodist Church. As
well, he was apparently a very successful farmer - owning 1500
acres by 1815. (That's almost 2½ square miles!) He married
twice, to sisters.
Like his father, John apparently preferred to make his
inheritance distributions before his death. He had a large
family, but he also was a large landowner, and he acquired
additional land in order to make the distributions. His youngest
son Frederick, who died in his mid-20's was the only son to have
missed receiving his father's generosity.
John seems to have raised Anderson Briles, son of his daughter
Martha. Not only is Anderson found in his household in 1850,
John deeded him a share of land exactly as he did to his sons.
1800 - John Briles receives a state grant of 100 acres.
1801 - John buys 346 acres from John Hoover Sr.
1801 - He buys 91 acres from the estate of Andrew Hoover.
1803 - He buys 491 acres from John and Michael Fouts.
19 Dec 1814 - Frederick sells two tracts of land to his son John.
One tract contains 230 acres on both sides of Sheppard fork of
Caraway, and the other contains 100 acres on the west side of the
old tract. [1] This was apparently part of Frederick's plan to
distribute his property before his death.
Aug 1815 - Frederic Briles of Randolph Co. lets George Briles
of Rowan Co., NC, have 200 acres on both sides of Hambey's Creek
next to Gasper Sprinker (?), also another 52 acres on Hambey's
Creek next to Jacob Lop and Gasper Brinkle (?), for $500. wit:
Ansel Pearce and John Briles. Proven this date. Book 20:476
1815 - John Briles is listed on the Randolph Co. tax list.
He has 560 a. Caraway $1000
500 a. Uharie $ 700
440 a. $ 700
The total is $2400 valuation. One white poll.
1820 - The census of Randolph Co. was lost to fire.
1826 - John sells 437 acres to his son Noah.
1830 - He is not to be found in the census records!
1833 - He continues to add to his land holdings, buying
408 acres from Samuel Walker.
1835 - His last major land purchase takes place - he buys
240 acres from Ezra Dorset.
1836 - John deeds much of his land away to his sons - 245
acres to Jacob, 296 acres to Dan, 200 acres to Solomon, 408 acres
to John Jr.
1838 - He deeds 240 acres to his son Alexander.
1843 - He deeds 250 acres to his son Alfred.
1844 - He deeds 100 acres to Anderson Briles.
1850 - John and his second wife, and Anderson Broyles (son
of their daughter Martha) are listed in the census of Randolph
Co., NC. His property is valued at $830.
