Elmira probably died prior to 1880. Family trees at Ancestry.com say
she was the mother of two children, one by William Hess. No marriage
record has been found, but the product of that union, John William Hess,
carried the Hess name. Daughter Dovey carried the Briles name. In
the 1880 census the children are living with their grandmother Dovey
(Daugherty) Briles in Harrison Co.
30 Aug 1891 - The marriage record of John W. Hess to Ellen German gives
the groom's father as Wm. Hess and the mother's maiden name as Briles.
