Samuel was named for his maternal grandfather.
He is most unusual in that he does not appear in the US census
until 1870. The entry has a huge error in his age, listing him
as 27 instead of 44, but it's clearly him-- he is newly married
to Martha and his 83 year old father is living with them.
Samuel settled on a large tract of land near Modesto which he farmed
until his death, at which time he owned 1,760 acres. [244]
After Samuel's death in 1903 Helen moved to Oklahoma and lived
with her son by her first marriage.
