Marcus and his descendants spell their last name Bryles.
He is a bit of a puzzle in terms of his wives. The presence
of Andrew L. in his household in 1850 suggests he married twice
because Andrew L. was born prior to Marcus's marriage to Mary
Montgomery. Andrew L. cannot be a son of Marcus's deceased
brother Ira because he was not listed in the court records
settling the estate. It thus appears certain that Marcus married
more than once.
1839 - Marche? B. Briles is on the tax list of Dyer Co.,
Tenn., along with this father and brother Ira. He is taxed for
one white poll. [240]
1840 - Marcus's census entry shows that his father and
mother are living with him in Fayette Co., Tenn. [5]
7 Jul 1845 - Marcus B. Bryles is appointed administrator of the
estate of Andrew Bryles, deceased. A bond of $8000 was put up by
him. sec: John Holloway, Nathaniel P. Tatum, George Pinchback.

1850 - The census shows that Marcus and his family spent
some time in Mississippi from around 1842 to 1848. [5] He owns
10 slaves [241]
6 Feb 1854 - The will of Mark B. Bryles mentions wife Nancy C.
and youngest child William. Brother-in-law John Holloway is named
executor. {Will Book B:119} The date on this is suspect.
1860 - M.B. Bryles and sons Christopher and William are
a household in Prairie Co., Ark. They are living next door to
Marcus's daughter Sarah Ann and her husband. Marcus is quite
wealthy-- he has real estate valued at $12,000, and personal
property (18 slaves) valued at $14,000. [5] [241]
But where is his wife Mary? Given that Marcus and Mary had no
more children after 1850, at least as far as we can tell, it
suggests that Mary died c. 1851. She would have been only around
30 years old.
1865 - Marcus dies. I'm not able to find the source for
this but there seems to be general agreement he died in 1865.
He is buried in the Bryles Family Cem. in Lonoke Co., Ark. [235]
(Lonoke Co. was created in part from Prairie Co. in 1873.)
The marker ("Mark Benjamin Bryles") is recent, does not list a
wife but does list his children. Curiously, the headstone next
to Marcus's is that of an Adeline W. Bryles (1817-1859). Given
her birthdate and proximity to Marcus we would normally assume
she is his wife. It would thus appear that Mary died sometime
after 1850 and he remarried to Adeline who died in 1859.
But to continue, there's well-established internet lore that Marcus
married the widow Nancy J./C. (Foster) Caskey whose husband J.J.
died in the Civil War.
1870 - N.C. Bryles is a head of household in the census
of Prairie Co., Ark. A William Bryles, 23, is living with her,
as well her children by her first husband: 10-year-old Martha
Caskey and Joseph Caskey, 22. (Their relationship is confirmed by
the family of J.J. Caskey in the 1860 census of Prairie Co., but
note that she is given as Nancy J. Caskey. There seems to be
some confusion about her middle initial.) What's more, Nancy's
daughter Sarah Caskey married Marcus's son Christopher!
