Who is Allen Broyles? According to the records below, he was a man
with two mothers! Tradition says he was a grandson of Peter, but it
seems clear from the census records and other information that he was
probably not a child of any of Peter's sons. On the other hand, the
census record supports the case that he was a son of Solomon of
Zacharias. Tradition also says that Solomon supported two families.
The answer to this riddle seems to be that he was an illegitimate son
of Peter's daughter Elizabeth. She married Robert Rains in 1807 when
Allen was a few years old. As was the custom, Allen kept the name
Broyles, and was raised by a relative of Elizabeth, in this case,
Solomon Broyles.
Note the three children supposedly born in 1838. Lewis's dates are
from his tombstone. Adaline's death certificate says she was 16 at her
death. [230] gives Malinda's birth but the census record suggests it
was actually 1837.
1827 - Allen begins appearing on the tax lists of Monroe
Co., Va. [51] This suggests a birth around 1806.
7 Oct 1833 - "Allen Broyles & Elizabeth Rains his mother & all the
heirs of Robert Rains dec'd" witness Allen's sale of a 111 acre
tract to Robert Thrasher of Monroe Co., Va., for $1. [86]K:718
11 Feb 1836 - Eliza and Frederick Albert sign a permission to
allow their "daughter Elizabeth Williamson" to marry Allen Briles
(Rains crossed out). Monroe Co., Va. Photocopy. [282] Note
the confusion as to Allen's surname. Frederick Albert was
Eliza's second husband.
15 Feb 1836 - Isabel Dunn signs a permission to allow her son
(unnamed) to marry. Co-signed by Isaac Cales and Susanna
Broiles. ibid. Isabel Eakins had married Solomon Broyles, separated,
and apparently remarried to a Dunn. Allen was raised in Solomon's
household and was over 30 years old when this document was written.
15 Feb 1836 - Marriage bond was made by Allen Broyles with John
A. Powers as security. ibid.
1850 - In the census of Tazewell Co., Va., an 18 year-old
Eliza Jane Broyles is in the household. I suspect she was a daughter
of Lovel Broyles (a "brother" to Allen). Lovel was widowed sometime
in the 1840's, and was probably unable to raise the children by
himself. As was common at the time, the children were taken in by
relatives or family friends.
