John and Mary lived in Morley, Yorkshire, except for a
brief journey to America. Daughter Mary was born in
Pennsylvania!
1861 - Census of Morley. John is a coal miner. He
gives his birthplace as Queenshead.
They are not found in the 1871 U.K. census. As was common,
John first went to America, got settled, and then sent for the
family. He is not found in the U.S. census of 1870.
24 Apr 1871 - Mary Jagger, along with Joseph, Ann, and Emma,
are on the passenger manifest of the S.S. Batavia arriving at
New York City from Queenstown, Ireland, and Liverpool,
England.
c. 1875 - They returned to England
1881 - Census of Morley. John is a contractor and gives
his birthplace as Halifax.
1884 - John died at the age of 52.
1891 - Census of Morley. Widow Mary is the head of
household. Most are employed in the wool business but son
John M. is a grocer's assistant.
1901 - Census of Morley. Mary and John M. are living
together.
