John's tombstone says he was born in 1845 but his family journal
says it was 1843. [220] The census record supports this.
John W. Broyles served in the 33rd Arkansas Infantry, A-C. [280]
John's ancestry is not nailed down. He is currently thought to be
the son of Adam C. Broyles of Ouachita Co., Ark. but the connection
is not firm. It is possible there are two Johns, one found in 1850
and 1860 Arkansas, and one found in 1870 and 1880 Texas.
Primarily we connect the Arkansas and Texas records through the wider
family's movement. His mother remarried to James Oglesby and eventually
moved to Texas. A widow in 1900, she is living with John's brother James
in Hunt Co., Tex. James came to Hunt Co. around the year 1870 or so,
perhaps a bit after the time when John showed up in nearby Smith Co.
John's census records, however, leave a lot to be desired. Let's start
by asserting that John's family group sheet, created by some of his
descendants, is correct. He married twice to women named Marilla and
Mary, had children by both, and died in Van Zandt Co., Tex., in 1890.
Working backwards in time, the 1880 census of Van Zandt has his age as
27 when it should be 37. His birthplace should be Miss. but is Arkansas
instead. (This isn't a big mistake given that he grew up in Arkansas.)
His daughter Ida should be given as 12 years old but is listed
as 2. Yet, as expected, she is the child of a different woman than John's
wife Mary as indicated by her location at the end of the list, and her
mother's birthplace. Ida's mother Marilla Fowler was indeed born in
Alabama. This 1880 census entry is quite flawed but appears to be that
of the John W. Broyles who died in that same county ten years later.
Backing up further, the 1870 census of Smith Co., Tex., shows him with
first wife Marilla and his inlaws. Marilla is the daughter of Americus Moore
Fowler of Calhoun Co., Ala. The Fowlers came to Texas in the late 1860's,
judging from the birthplaces of their children. John may have already been
there when they arrived.
